Automatic and manual refers to the type of transmission (or gears) that is in the car. In a manual vehicle, you are required to change the gears yourself at the correct time. As the name suggests an automatic car automatically changes the gears at the appropriate time.

What Is The Difference Between Manual Cars And Automatic Cars?

If you live in a busy city where shifting gears and clutch control is an essential part of daily driving, learning to drive a manual car may not be for you. Perhaps you have previously taken driving lessons in a manual car and found the handling of the gears difficult. A driver may also choose an automatic car because they are unable to change gears as easily due to a disability. If this describes you, you are not alone. Many people find learning to drive and passing their test in an automatic much easier and more enjoyable.

A car equipped with an automatic transmission changes the gears automatically for you. If your car has a manual transmission, you will have to change the gears by yourself.

Manual cars usually have three pedals, the clutch, brake, and accelerator. They also come with a gear stick, used in conjunction with the clutch to change gears. You use your left foot to operate the clutch, while your right foot is used for the other two. When you need to change gear, you press down on the clutch. To select the correct gear for your speed, when the clutch is down simply move the gear stick for the right gear. The majority of manual cars will have a clutch pedal, however, some cars can replace the pedal with a trigger or a button on the gearstick.

An automatic car does without a clutch because the gears are changed automatically. An automatic car will change the gears automatically as it speeds and slows down. In an automatic car you don’t need to know how to coordinate the clutch, gear lever and accelerator. Because of this an automatic car is much more easy to learn than a manual car. A footrest is usually used in place of the clutch. It is difficult for automatic cars to stall as they don’t have a clutch. It is also impossible to put an automatic car in the wrong gear or grind the gears.

Manuals also have a different gear stick from Automatics. You can choose between 1-5 forward gears and 1 reverse gear in a manual car. An Automatic’s gear stick has 4 main operations. While there are many variations, these four operations, (P) park (D) drive (N) neutral (R) reverse. are the most usual ones. These operations are easy to understand, except for neutral, which is used when you’re stopped at traffic lights, or in heavy traffic.

Another difference is the fact that you must use the accelerator to get a manual vehicle to move on the flat. But if you put an automatic into drive or reverse, the car will creep along all by itself. Although it won’t move very fast until your press the accelerator, it will still be moving. This is important to remember if you’re used to driving a manual car and plan to switch to an automatic

Manual cars are more popular than automatics in the UK, but the number of new automatics being built is increasing. Automatics are generally more expensive to purchase as well as to run and maintain. They tend to consume more fuel than manual cars. Additionally, they are more expensive to maintain and to insure because they are more complex to make.

What Are The Benefits Of Learning To Drive An Automatic?

It is not necessarily easier to learn how to drive an automatic car, it all depends on what you are dealing with. It won’t make much of a difference to you if you have a common issue like observation.

Driving in an automatic is a good option if your problems with clutch control or gear changing. Driving in urban areas with lots congestion it is easier. Because of the nature of urban driving, you will have to change gears often. This can be difficult for both experienced drivers and learner drivers.

The automatic car allows you to take your driving exam without worrying about stalling or having to use clutch control. A learner will have a lot less difficulty with driving manoeuvres, such as turning in the road or starting from a hill due to no gears or clutch control required.

If you have difficulties with the gears in a manual car, an automatic car may be a better choice. You might find it easier to learn how to drive and pass your driving test.

Is There A Downside To Driving An Automatic Car?

As stated above, automatic cars tend be more expensive than manual cars to purchase, run and maintain. Automatic driving lessons can often be more expensive that manual driving lessons because of this.

One downside to learning how to drive in an automatic car is that it does not allow you to drive a manual car. However, if you pass your test in a manual car, you will be able to drive both.

It is possible that your future choices in buying or renting a vehicle or van may be limited by taking your driving test in an automatic car. In the event that you decide later to drive a manually-operated car, you will need another test.

Automatic cars have a lower pass rate than manual cars. This shouldn’t discourage you, however, as many learners pass their driving test with automatic cars each year.

Are automatic cars more expensive to insure?

Because automatic cars are usually more expensive to buy, the car insurance premiums tend to be higher. This is to cover the cost of any damage, or the cost of a replacement vehicle. For example, an automatic gearbox is more complex than a manual one and so would usually cost more to replace.

Do I need to use handbrake on automatic car?

Always apply the parking brake when you are stationary in an automatic car. In P or N, the car will not drive, but the parking brake will keep it still. However, if in any other gear, the car will drive off under power if you touch the accelerator pedal, purposefully or by accident unless you have the brakes on.

Can you shift from drive to neutral without breaking?

Though it will not harm your transmission to shift into Neutral while your vehicle is in motion, the additional wear on your brakes by leaving the transmission in Drive will be negligible over the life of the brake pads. I
