Manual and automatic refer to the type transmission, or gears that your car has. A manual car requires that you change the gears yourself when necessary. As the name suggests an automatic car will change the gears automatically when needed.

What’s The Difference Between Manual And Automatic Cars?

Driving a manual car isn’t for everyone, especially if you live in a busy area where shifting gears and controlling the clutch are a daily part of your driving. Perhaps you’ve had driving lessons in a manual vehicle before but found it difficult to handle the gears. A driver may also choose an automatic car because they are unable to change gears as easily due to a disability. These are just a few of the many reasons why you may find learning how to drive and passing your driving test much easier in an automatic.

An automatic transmission car changes the gears automatically for you as your speed increases or decreases. If you drive a car with a manual transmission, then you will need to change the gears as you speed up and slow down.

There are three pedals in manual cars, the clutch, brake, and the accelerator. You also have a gear stick which when used with the clutch allows you to change the gears. You use your left foot to operate the clutch, while your right foot is used for the other two. To change gears, you press the clutch down. The clutch must be down in order to move the gearstick and select the right gear for you. You will find a clutch pedal on most manual cars, but some cars, replace the pedal with a trigger/button on the gear stick.

An automatic car does not have a clutch, as the changing of the gears are done automatically by the car. As the vehicle speeds up, the gears will automatically change higher and as it slows down the gears will change to a lower gear. The co-ordination between the clutch, accelerator and gear lever is not required when driving an automatic car. This makes learning to drive an automatic car a lot easier than learning how to drive a manual. A footrest replaces the clutch and is used instead of a pedal. It is difficult for automatic cars to stall as they don’t have a clutch. You will also not accidentally place the car in an incorrect gear, or grind the gears.

Manuals also have a different gear stick from Automatics. Manual cars have five, possibly 6, forward gears and one reverse gear. An Automatic has four main operations. Although there are variations, the four main operations for the gear stick are (P) park (D) drive (N) neutral (R) reverse. With the possible exception of neutral (which is used in heavy traffic or at traffic lights), most operations are quite obvious.

Another difference is that a manual car will not move on the flat unless you use the accelerator. An automatic, however, can be set into reverse or drive and the car will move by itself. It will move, but it won’t go very fast unless you push the accelerator. This is something to keep in mind if you want to switch from a manual to an automatic car.

Manual cars are more popular than automatics in the UK, but the number of new automatics being built is increasing. Automatic cars tend to be more expensive to purchase, run and maintain. They consume more fuel than a manual car, and are also more costly to repair or insure.

What Are The Benefits Of Automatic Driving Lessons

Driving an automatic car is not necessarily any easier, it depends on the issues you are having. You won’t notice a difference if you struggling with a common problem such as observation.

If you are having difficulty with clutch control or gear changes, learning to drive an automatic will be a lot easier. There is much less to consider when learning to drive in a city with lots of congestion. It is a stop-start driving style that means you’ll be changing gears constantly. This can be difficult for both experienced drivers and learner drivers.

An automatic car makes it easier when doing your driving test as you do not have the risk of stalling the car and any struggles you have with clutch control. Because there are no gears so you do not need a clutch in an automatic car, it is much easier to perform manoeuvres like a turn in traffic or a hill start.

You might have difficulty managing the gears of a manual car. If this is the case, it might be easier to learn to drive in an automatic car.

Is There A Downside To Driving An Automatic Car?

As stated above, automatic cars tend be more expensive than manual cars to purchase, run and maintain. This is why automatic driving lessons are more expensive than manual driving lessons.

A downside to learning to drive an automatic car is that your license does not qualify you to drive a manual car. You can drive both manual and automatic cars if your test is passed in a manual car.

This means that if you are taking your driving test in an automatic car, it may limit your options when renting or buying a car in the future. If you decide that you want to drive a manual vehicle, you will need to take the test again

The pass rates for automatic cars are typically lower than those for manual cars. However, don’t let this deter you as every year thousands of learners pass their driving tests in automatic cars.
