Manual and automatic refer to the type transmission, or gears that your car has. You must change the gears yourself in a manual car. Automatic cars change the gears when needed for you.

What Is The Difference Between Automatic Cars And Manual Cars?

Driving a manual car isn’t for everyone, especially if you live in a busy area where shifting gears and controlling the clutch are a daily part of your driving. Perhaps you have previously taken driving lessons in a manual car and found the handling of the gears difficult. Another reason drivers may choose an automatic is because they have difficulty changing the gears due to a disability. If this is you, you’re not alone. Many people find learning to drive and passing the driving test in an automatic much easier.

Automatic transmission cars automatically change gears for you. You will need to change the gears yourself if you drive a manual transmission car.

Manual cars usually have three pedals, the clutch, brake, and accelerator. They also come with a gear stick, used in conjunction with the clutch to change gears. The clutch is operated using your left foot while the other two are controlled with your right foot. To change gear, you push the clutch down. When the clutch is down, you can move the stick to select the proper gear for your speed. The majority of manual cars will have a clutch pedal, however, some cars can replace the pedal with a trigger or a button on the gearstick.

An automatic car does not have a clutch, as the changing of the gears are done automatically by the car. As the vehicle speeds up, the gears will automatically change higher and as it slows down the gears will change to a lower gear. In an automatic car it is not necessary to be proficient in coordinating the accelerator, clutch, and gear lever. This makes learning to drive an automatic car a lot easier than learning how to drive a manual. A footrest replaces the clutch and is used instead of a pedal. It is difficult for automatic cars to stall as they don’t have a clutch. You will also not accidentally place the car in an incorrect gear, or grind the gears.

A Manual’s gear stick is different than an Automatic. A manual has one reverse gear and five, possibly 6, forward gears. An Automatic has four main operations. Although there are variations, the four main operations for the gear stick are (P) park (D) drive (N) neutral (R) reverse. The operation are very simple, with perhaps the exception of neutral that is used when your vehicle is stopped at traffic lights or in heavy congestion.

A second difference is that a manual car cannot move on the flat unless you use the accelerator. However, an automatic can be put into drive or reverse and it will glide along by itself. Although it won’t move very fast until your press the accelerator, it will still be moving. If you’re used to driving manual cars and want to switch to an automatic, this is something you need to remember.

Manual cars are the most popular in the UK, but the number of automatics being manufactured is increasing. Automatic cars tend to be more expensive to purchase, run and maintain. On average they use more fuel than manual cars, and they are more expensive to repair and insure.

What Are The Benefits Of Learning To Drive An Automatic?

Although learning to drive in an automatic car can be easier than driving a manual car, it all depends on your specific difficulties. Learning in an automatic car won’t help you if your problem is observation

It is possible to learn to drive an automatic car if gear changes or clutch control are difficult for you. There is much less to consider when learning to drive in a city with lots of congestion. You will need to constantly change your gear because of the stop-start nature involved in driving in densely populated areas. This can be difficult for both experienced drivers and learner drivers.

You can take your driving test in an automatic car, eliminating the possibility of the car stalling and any clutch control problems. A learner will have a lot less difficulty with driving manoeuvres, such as turning in the road or starting from a hill due to no gears or clutch control required.

You might have difficulty managing the gears of a manual car. If this is the case, it might be easier to learn to drive in an automatic car.

Are There Any Downsides To Driving An Automatic Car?

As we have already mentioned, automatic cars are generally more expensive to buy, run and maintain. This is why automatic driving lessons are more expensive than manual driving lessons.

A downside to learning to drive an automatic car is that your license does not qualify you to drive a manual car. You can drive both manual and automatic cars if your test is passed in a manual car.

Passing your driving test in an automatic vehicle may restrict your choices when it comes to renting or buying a car or van in the future. In the event that you decide later to drive a manually-operated car, you will need another test.

In general, automatic cars have lower pass rates than manual cars. This shouldn’t discourage you, however, as many learners pass their driving test with automatic cars each year.
