Manual and automatic refer to the type transmission, or gears that your car has. A manual car requires that you change the gears yourself when necessary. As the name suggests an automatic car automatically changes the gears at the appropriate time.

What Is The Difference Between Manual And Automatic Cars?

It can be difficult to learn how to drive a manual vehicle, especially if you live in a busy area where daily driving involves lots of changing gears and clutch control. Perhaps you’ve had driving lessons in a manual vehicle before but found it difficult to handle the gears. Another reason drivers may choose an automatic is because they have difficulty changing the gears due to a disability. If this describes you, you are not alone. Many people find learning to drive and passing their test in an automatic much easier and more enjoyable.

If you are driving an automatic transmission car, it will automatically change the gears for you. You will need to change the gears yourself if you drive a manual transmission car.

The clutch, brake and accelerator are the three pedals used in manual cars. They also come with a gear stick, used in conjunction with the clutch to change gears. The clutch is operated using your left foot while the other two are controlled with your right foot. Simply press the clutch down to change gear. When the clutch is down, you can move the stick to select the proper gear for your speed. The majority of manual cars will have a clutch pedal, however, some cars can replace the pedal with a trigger or a button on the gearstick.

An automatic car does without a clutch because the gears are changed automatically. An automatic car will change the gears automatically as it speeds and slows down. In an automatic car you don’t need to know how to coordinate the clutch, gear lever and accelerator. Because of this an automatic car is much more easy to learn than a manual car. Instead of a clutch pedal, there’s usually a footrest. Automatic cars are very difficult to stall because they don’t have a clutch. You will also not accidentally place the car in an incorrect gear, or grind the gears.

Manuals have a different gear stick than Automatics. Manual cars have five, possibly 6, forward gears and one reverse gear. The four main operations of an Automatic’s gear stick are (P), park, (D) drive, (N)  neutral, and (R) reverse. There are many variations but these are the main four operations. These operations are easy to understand, except for neutral, which is used when you’re stopped at traffic lights, or in heavy traffic.

Another difference is the fact that you must use the accelerator to get a manual vehicle to move on the flat. But if you put an automatic into drive or reverse, the car will creep along all by itself. The car will move even though it is not going very fast, until you use the accelerator. This is important to remember if you’re used to driving a manual car and plan to switch to an automatic

Manual cars are more popular than automatics in the UK, but the number of new automatics being built is increasing. Automatic cars tend to be more expensive to purchase, run and maintain. On average they use more fuel than manual cars, and they are more expensive to repair and insure.

What Are The Benefits Of Automatic Driving Lessons

The process of learning how to drive an automatic car isn’t always easier, it all depends upon what difficulties you are experiencing. You won’t notice a difference if you struggling with a common problem such as observation.

If you are having difficulty with clutch control or gear changes, learning to drive an automatic will be a lot easier. When you learn to drive in an urban environment with lots of traffic, there is less to worry about. You will need to constantly change your gear because of the stop-start nature involved in driving in densely populated areas. This can be an issue for experienced drivers as well as those who are learning to drive a manual vehicle.

The automatic car allows you to take your driving exam without worrying about stalling or having to use clutch control. A learner will have a lot less difficulty with driving manoeuvres, such as turning in the road or starting from a hill due to no gears or clutch control required.

You might have difficulty managing the gears of a manual car. If this is the case, it might be easier to learn to drive in an automatic car.

Is There A Downside To Driving An Automatic Car?

Automatic cars are more costly to purchase, maintain and run than manual cars. This is why automatic driving lessons are more expensive than manual driving lessons.

Another downside of learning to drive an automatic vehicle is that when you pass your driving test in an automatic, it doesn’t mean you can also drive a manual car. Your licence will allow both if you pass your manual driving test.

Passing your driving test in an automatic vehicle may restrict your choices when it comes to renting or buying a car or van in the future. You will have to take your driving test again if you decide to drive a manual car.

Pass rates for automatic cars are usually lower than those in manual cars. Don’t let it discourage you! Every year, thousands of learners pass driving tests in automatic car.

Is automatic a full licence?

You are only allowed to drive automatic cars, and not manuals. However, if you hold a manual licence, then you can also drive automatics. Therefore, the latter is a full licence.

Are automatic cars more expensive to insure?

Because automatic cars are usually more expensive to buy, the car insurance premiums tend to be higher. This is to cover the cost of any damage, or the cost of a replacement vehicle. For example, an automatic gearbox is more complex than a manual one and so would usually cost more to replace.

Do I need to use handbrake on automatic car?

Always apply the parking brake when you are stationary in an automatic car. In P or N, the car will not drive, but the parking brake will keep it still. However, if in any other gear, the car will drive off under power if you touch the accelerator pedal, purposefully or by accident unless you have the brakes on.

Can you shift from drive to neutral without breaking?

Though it will not harm your transmission to shift into Neutral while your vehicle is in motion, the additional wear on your brakes by leaving the transmission in Drive will be negligible over the life of the brake pads. I
