Automatic and manual refers to the type of transmission (or gears) that is in the car. In a manual vehicle, you are required to change the gears yourself at the correct time. As the name suggests an automatic car will change the gears automatically when needed.

What Is The Difference Between Automatic Cars And Manual Cars?

If you live in a busy city where shifting gears and clutch control is an essential part of daily driving, learning to drive a manual car may not be for you. You may have taken driving lessons in manual cars before but found it too difficult to handle the gears. A disability that prevents drivers from changing gears easily is another reason why they may choose to learn to drive in an automatic. If this is you then don’t worry as you are not the only one. Many people find it easier to learn how to drive and pass their driving test in an automatic .

An automatic transmission car changes the gears automatically for you as your speed increases or decreases. If your car has a manual transmission, you will have to change the gears by yourself.

There are three pedals in manual cars, the clutch, brake, and the accelerator. You also have a gear stick which when used with the clutch allows you to change the gears. You use your left foot to operate the clutch, while your right foot is used for the other two. To change gear, you push the clutch down. When the clutch is down, you can then move the gearstick to select the required gear. Most manual cars have a clutch pedal, but some cars have a trigger or button on the gearstick.

Because an automatics car’s gears are changed automatically, it doesn’t have a clutch. As the vehicle speeds up, the gears will automatically change higher and as it slows down the gears will change to a lower gear. In an automatic car it is not necessary to be proficient in coordinating the accelerator, clutch, and gear lever. This makes it easier to learn how to drive an automatic car rather than a manual. A footrest is usually used in place of the clutch. It is difficult for automatic cars to stall as they don’t have a clutch. It is also impossible to put an automatic car in the wrong gear or grind the gears.

Manuals also have a different gear stick from Automatics. A manual has one reverse gear and five, possibly 6, forward gears. An Automatic has four main operations. Although there are variations, the four main operations for the gear stick are (P) park (D) drive (N) neutral (R) reverse. With the possible exception of neutral (which is used in heavy traffic or at traffic lights), most operations are quite obvious.

Another difference is the fact that you must use the accelerator to get a manual vehicle to move on the flat. But if you put an automatic into drive or reverse, the car will creep along all by itself. It will move, but it won’t go very fast unless you push the accelerator. This is something to keep in mind if you want to switch from a manual to an automatic car.

In the UK manual cars are more popular than automatics, however, the number of new automatics being built is increasing. Automatic cars are usually more costly to buy, run and to maintain. Automatic cars use more fuel than manual cars and they can be more costly to fix and insure.

What Are The Advantages Of Taking Driving Lessons In An Automatic Car?

It is not necessarily easier to learn how to drive an automatic car, it all depends on what you are dealing with. Learning in an automatic car won’t help you if your problem is observation

Driving in an automatic is a good option if your problems with clutch control or gear changing. There is much less to consider when learning to drive in a city with lots of congestion. It is a stop-start driving style that means you’ll be changing gears constantly. This can be difficult for both experienced drivers and learner drivers.

The automatic car allows you to take your driving exam without worrying about stalling or having to use clutch control.

If you have trouble managing the gears in a manual vehicle, you might find that learning to drive an automatic car is easier. This could mean you take fewer lessons to pass your test and receive your driving license.

Are There Any Downsides To Driving An Automatic Car?

As you can see, automatic cars are more expensive to own, maintain and run. This is why automatic driving lessons are more expensive than manual driving lessons.

A downside to learning to drive an automatic car is that your license does not qualify you to drive a manual car. However, if you pass your test in a manual car, you will be able to drive both.

It is possible that your future choices in buying or renting a vehicle or van may be limited by taking your driving test in an automatic car. Also, if later you decide you would prefer to drive manual cars, then you’ll need to take another driving test.

The pass rates for automatic cars are typically lower than those for manual cars. Don’t let it discourage you! Every year, thousands of learners pass driving tests in automatic car.
